The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) will be organizing Digital Media Latinoamérica 2014, the second Latin American edition of its renowned Digital Media conferencesm in Lima, Peru, on 19 and 20 September 2014.

After the success of the first edition, which took place in Bogotá, Colombian, in October 2013, this year’s Digital Media Latinoamérica, #DML14, will focus in providing inspiration, insight and solutions for the region’s news media industry digital transition.

Topics will include the latest digital revenue strategies, audience engagement, multiplatform journalism, big data, programmatic advertising and mobile strategies.

Speakers include: Jim Moroney, CEO of the Dallas Morning News; Carlos Guyot , Editor-in-Chief, La Nación, Argentina; Caio Tulio Costa, partner at MVL Communications, Brazil; Marcos Foglia , Digital Content Manager at Artear, Argentina; and Rosental Alves, Executive Director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.

“Digital Media Latinoamérica has proven to be the ideal platform for the region’s most innovation savvy publishers and media executives”, said Vincent Peyrègne, CEO of WAN-IFRA, the global organization of news publishing that represents 18,000 newspapers, 15,000 online sites and more than 3,000 companies in 120 countries. “The region’s industry continues to undergo a fast-paced digital transition, which brings challenges, but also, an array of business opportunities. Digital Media Latinoamérica will help identify, create and seize these opportunities”.

In 2013, Internet users reached 299.5 million in Latin America, according to an estimate by US Media Consulting. E-commerce sales reached US$70 billion according to the Latin American Institute of E-Commerce. Smartphone use increased 45% in 2013 and mobile ad spend will grow by 70% until 2017, according to eMarketer.

Case studies will include:

-    The Dallas Morning News: founded in 1885, the DMN is the major daily newspaper serving the Dallas, Texas (USA) area, with a daily circulation of over 400,000. Jim Moroney will explain how in a constant quest for new revenue streams, the DMN has innovated and experimented with success in many projects, such as Speak-Easy, a successful content generation start-up and 508Digital, a digital marketing solutions.

-    La Nación of Argentina, one the region’s most prestigious news companies, in under going many changes. After moving to a brand new newsroom in September 2013, the company appointed Carlos Guyot, 44, to editor-in-chief on February this year. He had been the newspapers’ first Innovation director and successfully led the print version’s redesigning process. He will present the importance of a new type of media management and leadership, focused on innovation and user experience.

-    Artear is the television media company for Grupo Clarín, Argentina. Marcos Foglia is its Digital Content Manager, and has had extensive experience in launching successful digital platforms. One of its most impressive ones is “TN en todas partes”, a project that got Todo Noticias, Clarín’s news cable channel, to be available in 17 different platforms!
 
-    Caio Tulio Costa is one of the most recognised digital media experts in Latin America. In 1996, he founded , better known as UOL, in Brazil, which is the largest Internet provider in Latin America. He worked for 21 years for Folha de S. Paolo, where he was editor and managing editor. He held high-level positions and was a consultant for large Brazilian Telcos such as Brasil Telecom and Oi. In 2013, during a fellowship at Columbia University he researched on the possible business models for the communications industry in the digital age and published the report, “A Business Model for Digital Journalism: How Newspapers should Embrace Technology, Social and Value Added Services”, which will be discussed at #DML14.
