Making press freedom your business: how restrictions on freedom of expression impact the global news industry

While the threat of violent assault, kidnapping and even murder are a daily reality for many journalists worldwide, other more subtle attacks against press freedom exist which attract far fewer headlines. Some of the most frequent problems faced by the editors and publishers we work with include censorship, financial pressures, advertising boycotts, government meddling and judicial harassment. For this year’s Press Freedom Round Table, a panel of outstanding experts from across the global media and freedom of expression community will discuss how the business of newspapers is affected when freedom of expression is threatened.

  • Guy Berger, Future Director, Freedom of Expression and Media Development, UNESCO
  • Alison Bethel McKenzie, Director, International Press Institute, Austria
  • Agnès Callamard, Executive Director, Article 19, UK
  • Amadou Mahtar Ba, CEO, African Media Initiative, Kenya
  • Gamal Eid, Human Rights Lawyer and Executive Director, Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, Egypt
  • Kamel Labidi, President, National Authority to Reform Information and Communication, Tunisia
  • Aboubakr Jamaï, Co-founder and former Managing Director, Le Journal Hebdomadaire and 2010 Gebran Tueni Award laureate, Morocco
  • Nicolás Pérez Lapentti, Publisher and Deputy Director of New Media at El Universo, Ecuador
  • Ambassador Helmut Tichy, Legal Advisor at the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Austria

Moderated by:
