Killing of Journalists: The Show Never Stops

These days a number of senior journalists in Pakistan, including some editors, travel only in armour-plated bulletproof vehicles. In some cases they have armed security escorts. A couple of them have survived assassination attempts. They, along with the others, continue to receive death threats from various quarters, mainly Islamists or ethnic militant groups.

End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists

The United Nations has designated the 2nd November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists’. It is important for an industry usually averse to introspection to acknowledge the deaths of journalists who have died in pursuit of the news that feeds our work. Recent atrocities have catapulted the deaths of two American journalists in particular onto front pages worldwide, yet the murders of James Foley and Steven Sotloff – however horrendous - remain just two of 40 deaths so far this year.

41 International Organisations Protest Detention of Ethiopian Journalists and Bloggers

A letter signed by 41 international organisations calling for the Ethiopian government to fulfill its obligations under international law and release all individuals who have been arbitrarily detained in violation of their fundamental rights under the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Proclamation.

Al Jazeera journalist Abdullah al-Shami released from Egyptian jail as others await verdict

After more than ten months in jail without charges, Abdullah al-Shami was released from Cairo’s Scorpion prison on Tuesday 17 June. The Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent was arrested by security forces in August 2013 while covering the violent dispersal of a pro-Morsi sit-in that left hundreds of protesters dead.

Turkish Journalist Füsun Erdoğan Released from 300 Year Jail Sentence

Sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 300 years, Fusun Erdogan went from a hard-working radio journalist in Istanbul to being confined to a prison cell. She was released on 8th May 2014.
